Junk Journaling and Art Journaling
Junk journaling is basically the act of recording one’s ideas and memories for future consideration. In essence, it’s a way of exploring used to purge out unwanted feelings and memories from the past. For many, it’s a way to create a visual record of one’s life – a memoir. It can also be called either “alternative memory” or “recreational journal.” It allows the author to view his or her past with new eyes, as well as to challenge current notions about how to interpret his or her present.
Junk journaling mixed media refers to the use of scrapbooking, painting, photography and other art forms in order to document an individual’s life. In other words, everything can be considered a form of journaling. Some people use their scrapbooks to capture memorable events. Others may just enjoy doing so, which helps them come up with a more complete ephemera. But whatever the purpose, there’s no denying that scrapbooking, painting, photography and other art forms can help one to better remember events, past and present.
Scrapbooks are good ways to make use of junk journals. There are a number of ways. One of them is to collect ticket stubs from places where they’ve been given out. A person can start by collecting just the ticket stubs. As the hobby grows, the artist can move on to more significant things such as purchasing real paintings, collages or even ticket stubs from major sporting events.
Another way to go about scrapbooking through junk journals is to collect “trash” in any sort of junk container, such as a plastic milk crate, empty tote bag or a used toy box. The artist can do anything he or she wants with these items. He or she can paint, draw, scan them or just leave them alone. What makes it even better is that these items are usually not thrown away as junk but are used as “collateral” for various projects or photo albums. This also gives the artist a chance to mix and match items from different junk journals and create something new for his or her next project.

Some scrapbook enthusiasts opt to combine different forms of media in their junk journalism endeavors. For instance, some people turn to vintage postcards in order to add interesting page layouts to their pages. However, there are some artists who also find the vintage newspapers of their respective era quite useful for making backgrounds and layouts for their pages as well.
Aside from this, some scrapbook enthusiasts also mix vintage and contemporary media in their efforts to create beautiful scrapbook page layouts. For instance, they can mix a couple of old photographs (of your granddad and mom) or artworks (you’ve got some of those from your art school days) into a collage that you can then create a background for on your scrapbook page. On the other hand, you can also make use of mixed media ephemera such as mementos, posters and vintage postcards. These items can be brought out of their hiding spots in your home or office and used to paint a nice layout for your scrapbook page layouts.
Some scrappers even choose to create a collage of their favorite photographs or objects from their childhood using various old newspapers, ticket stubs and books as the main medium. On these pages, the colors of the paper can be chosen to complement whatever it is that you’re depicting. In fact, some junk journalers have actually gone so far as to choose particular colors of ink for their scrapbooks. So not only can you mix and match media in your junk journaling, you can also choose a certain hue of ink to bring out a particular look that will suit your tastes.
As mentioned, scrapbooking has really grown into a much more popular hobby over the years. Many people now see it as an art form or even a way to keep their memories alive. And if you love to make things with your own two hands, then you’ll absolutely love scrapping away and saving your precious memories in your junk journals. Your scrapbooking hobby can turn into a real business with all the extra sales you can get from selling some of the vintage ephemera you’ve accumulated over the years!
